Classroom Libraries

Step ONE

  • Take a BEFORE picture

  • Determine the space

 

Step TWO

  • Read Aloud:  Charlie Cook’s Favorite Book

  • Discuss the type of books your students like to read. 

  • Chart the types of books: Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry.

  • Chart the types of fiction genres and non-fiction genres.

  • Model: how you determine the type of genre. Have the students select a book and practice.

 

Step THREE

  • Divide the students into two groups. A fiction group and non-fiction group.

  • Create groups of 4-5 students.  Give them a stack of books to sort by genre.

  • Create piles of books and label using sticky notes.

 

Step FOUR

  • Place the books into tubs.

  • Label the tubs according to genre.

  • Choose colored dot stickers and write the initial of the genre on the sticker. For Example (Fantasy= F)

  • Place a colored dot sticker on the outside of the tub and on each book.

 

Step FIVE

  • Place the books neatly on the bookshelf.

  • Read the book Pigsty.

  • Discuss putting the books away and keeping the library organized.

 

Step SIX

  • Enjoy the library
